Fire Paintings

I've had to make some serious changes to my artwork again. Eye problems and hand/nerve damage problems have steered me into fine art pyrography instead of oil painting. Painting with fire takes a bazillion times longer to produce the work, but it's a very satisfying and calming way for me to keep rendering the portraits of the songbirds that keep me company here at my studio.
I just had to try these nearly new (to me), gouache paints on a gesso primed surface to see if they would make me as happy with a songbird portrait as all the wild and wacky colors on the shaped "canvases". Hmmm...not really sure yet. The colorful, whimsical do-hickies that I've been creating this last month (see some of them below-or find me on Facebook), have been a wonderful lift to the spirits. Sure do wish that Daily Paintworks would allow us to share our sculpted works so I could keep playing with the weird colors of my Calico Crazies. I've been having the time of my life with them!Pauliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04698394372701527883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-219680190127192410.post-35642200628879066242014-07-07T23:47:00.001-07:002014-07-07T23:47:53.412-07:00

I've taken a break from my normal songbird paintings to indulge myself in tons of wild and crazy colors. I've made these kinds of pendants and ornaments for many years, but this is the first time that I gessoed them first, to make a shaped canvas to paint on. The gesso allowed me to play with all the mediums in my toolbox, so I started making all new molds for a whole new set of characters to play with, and ones that worked better/easier for painting calico patterns and weird things all over them.
While I was digging out all my different paint sets to see what worked best for what I wanted to do, I discovered an old set of gouache that I've had for half a million years (I think). I whole new artist was born! Painting with gouache on a gessoed surface responds completely different from any other kind of paint. Watercolors can't handle a candle to these things! I am so impressed and have a whole new respect for gouache paints. This kind of paint never runs or bleeds, no matter how heavy handed I get with the spray-on super gloss varnishes.
The sculptures have always been sold through local stores or craft/gift shows. I figured that since I can't see right now enough to continue painting my songbird portraits the traditional way, I'll have to start painting them in the round, after they've been sculpted in polymer clay, and then share them with the world so that I can have someone to talk to.

The paints I use are a heat set oil paint that is made from the same stuff that polymer clay is made of, so once it's heat set, it becomes a part of the clay underneath. The painting process is exactly the same as painting a normal oil painting. I see these sculptures as little round canvases. Usually the figurines end up being around 4" high with their perches, so are a little under life size.
Here's a little collection of sculpted birds in their undies, waiting for their turn in the "dressing room". Or should I call them blank canvases? No. They're alive and kicking and screaming for their clothes!
Next are 3 of the same birds with their "clothes on", along with some silk leaves and moss for extra accessorizing. We all need our accessories, you know.
After all the years of painting almost exclusively miniatures, the wonderful freedom of painting bigger has still got me captivated. I'm busy exploring what does and doesn't look okay with the birds' portraits, and while I'm exploring I'm just playing with lots of color. For right now, color play is the name of the day.
Cameo sculpting is a technique I've been teaching for about 12 years now, and it never seems to go out of style. It's sculpting in the half-round, and with certain variations of translucent and white clays can look like the finest hand carved cameos (if not better sometimes).

These little guys are done only with depth and deep carving to bring out the details, rather than with translucent clays that use the background colors for showing the shadows. You can see the finished pendants for sale in my Etsy "TinyPaintings" store.
Here's something completely brand new for me-bigger paintings! These are 6"x9", and wow, I sure do wish I had started doing bigger paintings lots of year ago! It was amazing how the paintbrushes just started "doing their own thing". My brushes and I had a ball playing with a new freedom that we haven't experienced before, and I have an idea that I probably won't go back to painting the tinies anymore. I'm hooked! Bigger is better.
The new canvases now have a very smooth and silky surface that allows me to fiddle to my heart's content.

Here's the first painting from my brand new, very old studio.

I found the answer to the dilemma of creating a studio space in an RV, and it comes with a touching story that makes my eyes wet every time I think about it.

You see, in 2003, my house and studio burned to the ground while we had been on Christmas vacation. We got the news 10 minutes before Christmas dinner was ready that we didn't have a home to come back to. All we owned were the shirts on our backs, so to speak. My husband had died of cancer during Christmas a couple of years before, leaving me with 2 young girls to finish raising, along with a small bird farm with hundreds of pheasants, quail, exotic chickens, ducks and geese. It was a beautiful place near a town of about 500 people, (I think). In such a tiny place, everyone knows everybody and when someone is in trouble, help comes from everywhere.

Donations came from towns far and wide. Churches called my friends constantly to see what was still needed, but there was just no way for me to know what to ask for. I couldn't think. All I knew was that I had been left with no way to make money. All of my art equipment, kiln, egg carving drills, porcelain molds, paints, brushes, computer-everything was gone (the fire had been so hot that it even melted my cone 10 porcelain kiln, if you can believe that).

I had two girls and hundreds of precious pets who needed me to get it together before we all went hungry. Homes were found for all the birds, and the three of us decided to move on-someplace where I could get work. The night before we left though, I got a call from one of the friends who said I had to get there immediately. She had something for me, and she figured it was precious.

She was right. It was. Some friends of hers had read about us in the papers and thought that since I was an artist, that perhaps I could use this old wooden case that had been stored in the top of their closet for many years. It had belonged to their artistic mother who had passed away lots of years ago and had left them this wooden art case. They weren't artists themselves, but had hung onto it just because it was precious to them. It was full of all her beautiful brushes, a small canvas with a drawing ready to start painting, and some tubes of oil paint that were so old they were hard. It was so beautiful and precious that all I could do was sit there and cry. I wasn't given her name, just the names of the people who gave it to me, and was told that she had belonged to the San Diego Art Guild. Sometimes I feel her guidance-I know, I know, I'm a little weird, but I swear I feel her pushing at me at times, and I feel it was her and those brushes that started me teaching local art classes back in 2004.

It's also because of this pushing, that I actually starting painting in oils for the first time in my life-had always used acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pencils-you name it-ANYTHING besides oils. Once I started with the oils, I haven't had any desire to go back to the other mediums. Oils are magic! I still use those brushes that were given to me also, and they're still in the same condition I got them in, even though they've created hundreds of paintings! Those too, are magic.

But the old wooden box they came in was too big to pack around for the classes I teach, so it had been stored in my garage for several years. I was going to leave it there during this last move to the RV park when I got struck between the ears again and was told to get my fanny out there and go grab that old box. It was precious, and I couldn't leave it behind.

And what a treasure it has just become!! I just now found out after all these years that it's a complete little studio in a box. I have been desperate to figure out how to find room for an easel, storage, paints, brushes, palette, and finding something tiny and efficient to carry it all to the next class, and when this box got in my way again, I finally opened it up for the first time in years and found all the answers to my prayers.

The first compartment makes an easel (I use poster putty to mount a canvas to a backing board so it's easy to move a wet painting), for the painting in progress, there's room enough for all my supplies, and all I need to do is close the lid to put my studio away at night. I see it's just an old Grumbacher art box, and I don't know if they still make them, but boy, if they do, and you're also looking for a tiny tabletop studio space, this is an awesome set-up. Just plain, pure efficiency, and in my case, a treasure that gives me tears and goose-bumps all over again. I am honored to have received such a precious gift. I'm ready to get back to painting now-the first one's standing in the easel in the photo. The paints are are in all the compartments in back of the easel and under the palette. Alongside the easel are three of the dozens of brushes I still use. I see that there used to be a wooden palette that had fit into the grooves in the lid, along with slots to hold wet canvases for transport.
I've been busy moving for the last few weeks, and boy has it been the hardest move of my life! We're trying to downsize from a 4 bedroom house, to a one bedroom, but then we've decided to take the plunge and move ourselves into an RV instead! Thought a rented studio space would work for me, but have found that my best paintings come to me in the middle of the night, and working during those hours in this big, antique building downtown had way too many bangs, thumps and squeaks for me to feel comfortable sitting there painting at night, so now I'm moving my studio back home again. Hmmm.... Home. Studio. In a travel travel? Let's see...

I felt a wild need to go back to painting something a little more "mechanical" for a few days. Inspiration needed to come from my camera, 'cause putting together an attractive bird composition from my head wasn't working while I'm busy inventing ways to reconfigure a functional studio space.

So here's the two paintings that have been born during the turmoil with the downsizing. I had so much fun painting these though, that I've decided I need to do more of them and so need to dig out my lighting equipment to do more serious work with the photos first.

Tomorrow though, the birds are singing outside my beautiful new home and I'm feeling the calling to get back to doing their little portraits again.Pauliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04698394372701527883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-219680190127192410.post-41617248054711071742012-05-03T16:58:00.001-07:002012-05-03T16:58:17.649-07:00Whispering Roses

This little titmouse is wondering how long it takes for blueberries to hatch. Are they going to fall out of those soft eggshells when they get too big? Guess he'll have to wait and see!
Here are some 5x5 paintings that have been sold recently. I normally paint about 3 or 4 paintings every day, and all of them are either ACEO (art trading card) size or 5"x5". Most of my inspiration comes from the chattering outside my windows and from the gardens where I spend many hours with my camera. Birds are my favorite subject to paint, as once I paint their eyes so they can see, they begin to sing to me too.
